December 14, 2004:
Navan
This a capella vocal quartet specializes in bringing to light some of the
most obscure yet exquisite pieces in the history of Celtic music. They sing in
the native languages of Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Brittany, Cornwall and the
Isle of Man, highlighting the elements that make each culture distinctive. They
sing solo, in unison, and in parts, according not only to the historical
context of the song but also to the feeling the group wishes to express. Some pieces
are widely known in one language but not in others, giving Navan an
opportunity to build on what is known and bring out the beauty of a little-heard
version with its own rhythms and cadences. Lullabies, men's and women's work songs,
folk hymns and ballads all find a place in the repertoire of this group,
described by reviewer Geoff Wallis as reminiscent of top Irish vocal trio The Voice
Squad. The Voice Squad is no more, but Navan is alive and well, filling the
Celtic a capella gap with gems of their own discovery.
