FALMOUTH CULTURAL COUNCIL ANNOUNCES GRANT RECIPENTS AND PRESENTATION EVENT
The Falmouth Cultural Council and Marty Tulloch, chair of the Falmouth Cultural Council, have announced the award of 13 grants totaling $3,950 for cultural programs in and around Falmouth. The grants were awarded from a pool of funds distributed to Falmouth by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency that supports public programs and educational activities in the arts, sciences and humanities.
An awards presentation will be held at Highfield Hall on Sunday, March 30, from 2:00 - 4:00 PM. Titled "Celebration Shindig" the event promises to be a fun time for celebrating the awards, the arts and spring! The public is invited to attend. The event is free, but guests are encouraged to bring a small potluck snack to share. The Falmouth Cultural Council is part of a grass-roots network of 329 local councils that serve every city and town in the state. The program is the largest, most decentralized one of its kind in the United States. The state legislature provides an annual appropriation to the Massachusetts Cultural Council, which then allocates funds to each local council. Decisions about which activities to support are made at the community level by a board of municipally appointed volunteers.
"It's the local volunteers who really make this system work," said Eric Turkington. "They make limited resources go as far as possible and they make the tough decisions about which projets should be supported. Thanks to them, the arts, sciences and humanities are part of people's everyday lives in every community across the state."
The members of the Falmouth Cultural Council are David Kelley, Lynn Berg, Ellen Dobbs, Jacek Zuzansky, Carmina Mock, Merletta Martin, Chris Jacobi, John DeMello, and Marty Tulloch.
Statewide, cultural council grants support an enormous range of grass-roots activities: concerts, exhibitions, radio and video productions, field trips for schoolchildren, after-school youth programs, writing workshops, historical preservation efforts, lectures, First Night celebrations, nature and science education programs for families and town festivals. Nearly half of LCC funds support educational activities for young people. This includes the PASS Program, which provides subsidies for school children to attend cultural field trips.
The Falmouth Cultural Council will seek applications again in the fall. Information and forms are available at our website: www.arts-cape.org/falmouthcc/ and are due Oct. 15.
